Diagnosis

  1. Physical Examination – This examination includes checking for fluids around the joints, physically warm or visually red joints and range of motion of the joints.
  2. Blood Tests – This common diagnostic tests include extracting and analyzing inflammation levels in the blood and joint fluids to help determine the type of arthritis. Other blood tests that check for specific types of antibodies like anti-CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide) RF (rheumatoid factor) are available too.
  3. Imaging Diagnostic Techniques

Digital Radiography

Digital Radiography improves radiography work flow efficiency and facilitates greater focus on the patient through instant image acquisition. X-rays are an important diagnostic tool in treating many conditions, such as broken bones, joint replacements, spine problems which include scoliosis, sports injuries and arthritis etc.

Computerised Tomography (CT) Scan
A computerised tomography or CT scan is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses x-rays and digital imaging to produce cross sectional images of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the body.

Diagnostic ultrasound
Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography, is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. This imaging technique is useful in diagnosing a wide variety of problems in muscles, ligaments, nerves and tendons.

Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

BMD is a procedure that uses x-rays to evaluate bone density when diagnosing osteoporosis. It is also used to predict a person’s risk of fractures and can be useful for monitoring the response to treatment as well.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a non-invasive medical imaging procedure which uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to produce pictures of the bones and soft tissues. MRI does not use x-rays and does not have any known side or after effects. MRI is used to diagnose and evaluate various medical conditions that affect the soft tissues.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Arthrography
Magnetic resonance arthrography is similar to magnetic resonance imaging but shows better images because a contrast solution called gadolinium is injected to swell the joint, outline joint structures and show any soft tissues tears and defects. MRI Arthrography is used to evaluate and diagnose joint conditions and is effective at detecting disease within the ligaments, tendons and cartilage.

  1. Electromyogram (EMG) – An electromyography is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the electrical activity or muscle response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. This test is used to help detect muscle disorders, nerve disorders and disorders affecting the connection between nerves and muscles. An EMG procedure involves the insertion of one or more needles (also called electrodes) through the skin into the muscle tissue to record the electrical activity of the muscles onto a computer.

Needle (Open Biopsy) – A bone biopsy is a procedure in which bone samples are removed to find out if abnormal cells are present. There are two types of biopsy:

  • Needle biopsy involves a small incision in the skin. A special biopsy needle is inserted into the bone to get a sample. This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia.
  • Open biopsy involves a larger incision in the skin. A piece of bone is removed surgically. This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.
