Dr Shah is a native of Penang, having been born and brought up here. After his secondary education at the Penang Free School, he continued to study medicine at the National University of Singapore. He pursued Cardiology as his primary interest and after completing his training overseas, he finally came back as a fully competent interventional Cardiologist to his hometown which he feels is the best place to live. His parents still live in Penang and his father is a general practitioner. Dr Shah joined the Gleneagles Medical Centre, Penang in 1999.

In the course of his studies and training, he has received numerous fellowships of major international institutions such as the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP, Edin), European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and the American College of Cardiology (FACC) in addition to the Malaysian (FNHAM) and Singaporean (FAMS) accreditations.

Dr Shah’s primary interest is in Interventional Cardiology, which is the treatment of coronary artery blockages using a variety of specialized catheters which are snaked into the heart through a small hole in the wrist. The blockages are subsequently opened using tiny balloons and then kept patent using small meshes called stents that are impregnated with medication. In the last 20 years of medical practice, he has witnessed and participated in the development and implementation of this wonderful technology into the mainstream of cardiovascular practice in Malaysia where heart disease remains the commonest cause of death. He is regularly invited to local and international cardiac conferences to lecture and participate in discussions about latest advances. Dr Shah keeps up-to-date with his techniques with frequent collaborations with international cardiologists from the USA and Japan who come to his catheterization laboratory in Gleneagles Medical Centre, Penang to perform complicated cases with him. Besides coronary intervention, he also performs peripheral intervention especially to the lower limbs to help save them from gangrene and amputations.

Dr. Shah continues to practise general cardiology in order to provide comprehensive care to his patients. He is proficient in echocardiography (including stress and transoesophageal), nuclear cardiology, rhythm management and pacemaker implantation and the latest CT coronary angiography to pick up early coronary disease. He can provide this service as the hospital has a powerful 64-slice CT scanner.

Dr Shah has a strong interest in research and further development of cardiovascular medicine and has been involved as a principal investigator in numerous international trials involving new medications and techniques such as the ONTARGET/TRANSCEND and RE-LY trials. He is now regularly consulted and invited to meetings on cardiovascular advances and research.

Despite his busy private practice and involvement in academic research and development, Dr Shah finds time to contribute to society by regularly providing free consultations and treatment at charity clinics.

Dr Shah is a third generation local Gujarati Jain who is married with 2 children. He is proficient in the English, Bahasa Malaysia, Hokkien, Hindi and Gujarati languages and is also a vegetarian. He is an avid musician and a great supporter of the Penang Island Jazz Festival!
