Dr Macdonell graduated from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, in 2001 with a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Honours) degree.  He continued his studies at La Trobe University, graduating with a Doctor of Psychology (Health Psychology) degree in 2005.  His doctoral thesis examined the role of Social Problem-Solving in Sleep-Onset Insomnia.

Dr Macdonell has been a registered Psychologist in Australia since 2005.  He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), which is the largest professional association of psychologists in Australia.  He is also a member of the APS College of Health Psychologists.  Prior to leaving Australia, he was a member of the Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy and the Australasian Sleep Association.

Dr Macdonell previously worked as a Clinical Health Psychologist with inpatients and outpatients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.  He provided psychological assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for anxiety disorders, depression, adjustment issues, sleep disorders, stress management, adherence to medical treatments, lifestyle change for medical conditions, eating problems, weight loss, smoking cessation, grief and loss, issues in geriatric care, pain management, and behavioural issues for a wide variety of medical and physical conditions.  He has also worked extensively with family members of patients.

At Gleneagles Medical Centre, Dr Macdonell offers psychological services for all of the above psychological problems and disorders.  He also provides consultation for relationship problems, gambling addiction, and work-life balance.  Many clients that benefit from psychological therapy do not necessarily have a diagnosable disorder, but are still struggling with significant life difficulties that can be improved through short-term psychological consultation.

Dr Macdonell practices Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as his main therapeutic approach.  CBT is a focused and relatively short-term therapeutic approach that helps clients to identify and modify unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.  CBT has been researched extensively and its effectiveness has been demonstrated for a wide variety of psychological disorders and problems.  He also utilizes therapeutic techniques from Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, depending on the needs of each client.
